Tourism infrastructure in Niger
Road Infrastructure Development
Niger’s Ministry of Transport and Equipment is planning to invite bids by 5 August for the rehabilitation and upgrade of National Road 1 (RN1) in the country. The Southern Niger Connectivity and Integration Project will finance the rehabilitation of the Maradi–Zinder section of Niger’s National Road. A project is underway to enhance connectivity and road safety along the Zinder-Agadez road section, which is crucial for tourism access to the northern regions.
Tourism and Cultural Infrastructure
Digital preservation and restoration work is being conducted on historic buildings in Agadez, Niger, with these efforts continuing into July 2025 to support the socio-economic and cultural development of the region. Agadez is benefiting from an EU-funded social housing project called DESERT, which aims to improve living conditions and potentially support tourism infrastructure development.
Energy Infrastructure for Tourism
The development projects in Niger include the construction of a 30MW solar power plant in Gorou Banda (Niamey), which will improve energy access for tourism facilities and other sectors.
Challenges and Constraints
Air transport remains a significant constraint to the development of tourism in Niger, limiting accessibility for international visitors. The tourism industry in Niger remains relatively limited, with most tourism activity concentrated in the north around Agadez, which provides access to desert attractions.
